Our Outdoor Environment

Canklow Woods Primary School has an amazing outdoor environment which helps us to provide the best possible opportunities for our children. It also that means a huge amount of our science teaching and learning can be done on our fantastic site.

We have a pond, which is constantly full of a vast amount of creatures and bugs.  Our classes use it regularly to investigate and explore the life up there.  Each year there are tadpoles and school use them for learning in class too.  Our environmental walk-way has also proved to be an amazing resource for children across the school to learn about animals, birds and insects and their habitats.  Children regularly explore the woods to see the changes in the environment, the habitats and the animals.  We continue to improve these so we can provide different learning experiences throughout the year.  We also have a family of foxes living in our woods that often come out to explore during the evenings.  We also have a pair of pheasants that sometimes make an appearance during the day.  More recently, up to 3 deer have been spotted enjoying our school grounds and  some badgers too.  Our school has a fully established Forest School curriculum adventure, which is incredibly exciting.  Children are enjoying spending time in our woods, building dens, looking for creatures and watching the secret video camera to see what it has been recording.  Watch out for more about this!

We have 2 Willow Domes which are used for reading and quiet activities.  Our Bug Hotel, outside class 4, continues to thrive with bugs and insects which the children love to inspect.  The garden area, together with the greenhouse, is currently being developed by our gardening club and we cannot wait to see what they grow this year.

Our trim trail give the children a chance to play different games and use their imagination at playtimes too.

We have two new additions to out outdoor areas.  One is a bike shelter, we can encourage children to ride their bikes and scooters to school and to be active and keep them safe in school for them.  We have also added a reading shed to our outdoor provision too.  This is an area where children can sit and read during playtimes in comfort and quiet.  It's amazing!
