ART

At Canklow Woods we follow the national curriculum to teach art.  We continually strive for new and innovative ways to include art into our work at school. Our art is usually linked to our topic work using a wide range of tools and techniques, all of which the staff and children either are or become very talented at. Our art work is always displayed beautifully alongside other work and we take pride in this creating an atmosphere of success and achievement. We have worked with a very talented art teacher Mrs Taylor who supports staff and children, this has enabled staff to develop their own skills and build on them for further topics and teaching.

Children are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Children become familiar with using pencil, pen and ink, chalk and oil pastels, paint, and watercolour.  Children are taught to use different tools for texture and tone in their work.  We become experts in creating our own ideas, drawing and mark marking, working with colour, printing, sculpture, and textile and collage.

Our art learning is recorded in sketchbooks across the school and should typically evidence individuals success and development.  Each child is unique and each sketchbook should be unique, enabling children to develop their independence and creativity. Teachers assess children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in Art by making observations of the children working during lessons and of work produced in children’s sketchbooks.
