First Steps is a funded two year old provision, which caters for children between the ages of 2 and 3 years old. The provision is well equipped with a wide range of age-appropriate resources and toys and full access to a purpose built outdoor environment. Children are cared for by a well-qualified team of staff with a range of relevant qualifications, from Level 3 Cache Diplomas in childcare to degree level qualifications in Early Childhood Studies and Early Years Teacher Status.
Children receive a play based approach to learning through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with valuable opportunities to develop their confidence, self-esteem, independence and social skills. Through observations, interaction and engagement with children, staff are able to support children in following their specific interests, progressing steadily in their development and in meeting children’s needs to ensure they are happy and confident individuals.
“Play provides the natural, imaginative and motivating contexts for children to learn about themselves, one another and the world around them. A single moment of sustained play can afford children many developmental experiences at once, covering multiple areas of learning and reinforcing the characteristics of effective learning.” Teaching and play in the early years-a balancing act? Children at First Steps enjoy interacting with children and adults, exploring their indoor and outdoor environment, making their own decisions and being part of a group. We provide children with varied stimulating and challenging activities both indoors and outdoors. Children are encouraged to access resources at their own choosing, to socialize and communicate with others while enjoying a wide variety of messy play, mark-making, physical activities, singing and dancing, stories, problem solving, exploring the natural environment and finding out how things work.
