Reading is a real passion for us at Canklow, staff and children included. We aspire to encourage and nurture a love of reading in many different ways:
providing a wide range of texts for the children to explore
having different activities and lessons where children can engage with books and read them with interest and excitement,
story time where children are read to
competetions and events such as World book day
Following the Read Write Inc phonics programme and once children are confident and fluent readers we teach them to fully understand what they are reading. We delve deeper into books to engage children in the characters, events and facts of narrative and non-narrative texts. We encourge children to choose books independently and love what they are reading. We have a wonderful display of all the 100 books to read in Key Stage two which children are devouring.
In class children take part in Reciprocal reading. Children work in groups with a teacher and read a short text and improve their comprehension skills. It allows children to become teacher for the session and after modelling by the teacher, the children will guide the rest of the session and discussions with questioning, summarising, clarifying and predicting.
